Cefix Conference and Exhibition Zhuhai, China (Part 1)
During the days of the 23rd to the 27th of September Dermot Murtagh (the big cheese) and I attended the CEFIX conference, CEFIX Trade Show and afterwards took time to visit a number of manufacturing factories. We attended these events to
• Educate ourselves and network with other buyers and suppliers
• Research industry trends
• Find solutions for remanufacturing problems
• Learn about new cartridges which will hit the market soon.
• Discuss Important points with our manufacturers
• Visit factories to inspect quality procedures.
Our first call of port was the Conference on the 23rd which was a one day event featuring presentations from the following industry leaders:
Art Diamond (Diamond Research Corporation)
Dr Edul N. Dalal (Xerox Fellow, Xerox Corporation)
Andrew Gardner (Worldwide Brand Protection Manager, Lexmark)
Dr Xiaoying Rong (California Polytechynic State University)
Jan de Kesel (In-Map) Bobo Wang (Aetas Technology – new LED printer technology)
Kennard S Cloud (Pantum – Worldwide Product Manager)
Denny Henger (CCID Consulting – Deputy General Manager)
From the 24th to 26th September we attended the
CEFIX Trade Show
For the 6th year running Remax Asia Pacific's annual international trade show for the cartridge remanufacturing industry broke previous records. The Zhuhai event attracted almost 10,000 visitors from 85 countries around the globe. There were 425 exhibitors at the massive Zhuhai Airshow Centre which was located 2-2.5 hours away by shuttle bus depending on traffic which at times was horrific.
The general concensus from visitors and manufacturers was that it wasn't as good as previous years. I was surprised to hear there was nearly 10,000 attendees as it seemed less crowded than in previous years. A lot of the exhibitors also mentioned that it wasn't as busy as the previous year. Which made me think that next time I will have to look out for that one visitor that visited the show 3000 times! I have this image in my mind of a guy walking in and out of the show constantly for three days. Stranger things have happened in this world!
Zhuhai and other nearby cities are considered the worlwide epi-centre of the aftermarket consumables industry. You could spend a lot of time in this area visiting the hundreds of factories related to the printer consumables industry.

New Cartridges
Canon has released new individual inkjet ink cartridges in the USA. We expect them here shortly. The model numbers in the USA are
550 Bk (15mls) 551 C, M, Y, GY, BK (7ml per cartridge)
550XL Bk (22mls)
551XL C, M, Y, GY, BK (11ml per cartridge)
It also has a change in design with the chip it now uses a FCB (flexible circuit board) rather than a PCB (printed circuit board).
In previous technical bulletins we mentioned about the new Epson XP Inkjet Printers that had been released in Japan. They have been now released in Australia and the cartridge models are : 200 Bk, C, M, Y 200XL Bk, C, M, Y 273 Bk, C, M, Y, PBK 273XL Bk, C, M, Y, PBK
The entry level printer Expression Home XP-100 starts at RRP $69.00
I had a quick look at these new 200 and 273 cartridges in China. They have a unique outlet port which is a rubber membrane, ink is held within the cartridge but once the membrane is touched ink passes through it.
Chips and Chip Resetters
With chip technology and firmware updates becoming part and part of this industry. We are always on the look out for resetting solutions for OEM cartridges. When this solution isn't available we need to provide the most stable and firmware change resistant chips we can provide.
We are currently investigating new chip resetting solutions. Recently we have just released our Canon 3 in 1 chip resetter which resets compatible and OEM chips for the Generation 1,2 and 3 canon chips (5,8s,520,521s,525,526s).
We also have the stick on chips for PG37/40/50/510/512 and CL38/41/511/513 cartridges. The only solution for Australian New Zealand region for restoring the ink levels and improving remanufactured cartridge compatibility on these models.
We are currently investigating other unique solutions.
Booths
We spent three full days visiting the booths and discussing various new products. We always believe quality is our highest priority and we do go the extra mile and are always looking for ways to continually improve our products and find new innovative solutions. During November and December we hope to release many new products that are currently under lock and key.
A Miracle in Zhuhai
Zhuhai is a warm city at the best of times. But on one particular day at the CEFIX it seemed that the air-conditioning was on the blink. It was extremely unpleasant for all and even the locals were struggling and starting to wither! Towards the end of the day I was really starting to feel it, no amount of water seemed to quench the thirst.
At first I thought it was a mirage, between the many exhibitors I spotted something. Could it be true? It was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. Maybe it was my dehydrated weary state but I thought I could see 'cold beer on tap'. But Yes! It was true a booth with cold beer on tap. We can tell you it went down well, the Belgium guy on the bar stool next to me seemed also to be enjoying it. By his demeanour I could see he had being settled for a while.
Look out for Part 2 of this Technical Bulletin on Thursday the 8th of November.

New HP564XL Compatible Cartridges with Chip
Recently we have released the new series of HP564XL compatible cartridges. Unfortunately we didn't have time to get the Ausjet Boxes printed yet. So our current stock is only available in a generic box.
But the great thing about these cartridges is the ink volume and ink quality. 30mls for the black cartridge and 18mls per colour and photo black. This is well and truly above the OEM ink volumes. The large black cartridge is equipped with a high grade pigment and the colours and photo black use german dyes.
During out in house testing these cartridges performed to a very high quality and were 100% reliable. It's almost important to note that even though the black cartridge holds 30mls of ink it will fit in all printers. It's not the same dimensions as that wide black HP564XL cartridge that HP released a few years back and then discontinued.
Stick on Chips PRICE REDUCTION and Installation tips!
For those remanufacturing the Canon Inkjet Printhead type cartridges we have good news for you. We have negotiated better pricing for you which means a lower price for you.
With regards to the chip installation its extremely important to clean the cartridges contacts thoroughly before installation of the chip. The chip works by making contact with the pins, it's therefore very important that these contacts are clean. Chip recognition errors and peeling of the chip can result if the contacts are not thoroughly cleaned.
We had one customer who's problems just vanished after he started cleaning the contacts with a contact cleaner and a light scourer. Chips that weren't recognising before now just worked. We would recommend using Isopropyl alcohol as its a good general contact cleaner.

Technical Bulletin 26th July 2012
HP Inkjet Printers 'Cartridge Protection'
Is the OEM trying to lock out large scale remanufacturers?
Recently it has come to our attention that HP has designed a new system to lock cartridges to a printer. Although this system only seems to be in its infancy it could cause a big problem for those incorporating swap and go systems or bulk remanufacturing operations. If you think about this logically it's a good way for the OEM to stop the collection of empties for batch filling or large scale remanufacturing.
The HP Officejet Pro 8600 cartridges uses the new 932 Black and 933 CMY individual cartridges. By default the 'cartridge protection' system is set to 'on'. When a new cartridge is installed in the printer it writes to the chip locking that cartridge to the printer. The 'cartridge protection' system can easily be turned off via the printer software. But why would the customer bother to do this? Even if the system is turned off it will not reverse a locked cartridge.
Unfortunately because its a default setting the vast majority of customers using these printers will have locked cartridges. From the customers point of view this wouldn't affect them in anyway way unless they had multiple printers that used the same cartridges.
The good news is that because the cartridge is locked to the printer it will not prevent you from remanufacturing the customers own cartridge.
HP Setup Cartridges
When you purchase a new printer that uses the HP564, 920 or 932 series cartridges. The cartridges that come in the box with the printer will be these new setup cartridges. These cartridges must be the first cartridges in the printer and are used as a way to setup accurate ink levels.
The following link provides more information of these cartridges.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02068088&cc=ad&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_auen_c-001_title_r0004
The real question that we need to ask is are these cartridges able to be remanufactured? Could they potentially be locked into a specific printer like the 'cartridge protection' system mentioned above.
So far we haven't received much feedback but it looks like they can be remanufactured without any problems.. touch wood.
One thing I do know is if you try to replace the setup cartridges before they are empty the printer will yell and scream at you. Once you put the setup cartridge back in its all happy again. So temperamental!!
If you do encounter any problems remanufacturing these starter cartridges please contact us. If a problem exists we would like to pass the word on as soon as we can!!
Sensient Inks for New Cartridges
Sensient has recommended the following inks for use with the following cartridge sets:
PG640 : C4103 or C4101
CL641 : C0166 cyan, C1067 Magenta, C1068 Yellow
HP932 : H5WL5
HP933 CMY : H940C, H940M, H940Y
HP950 : H5WL5
HP951 CMY : H940C, H940M, H940Y
Lexmark introduces new Inkjet Printers and Cartridges
Lexmark has released a new range of printers featuring Vizix Pro technology. The printers are designed as business units. The individual cartridge numbers are 220XL Bk,C,M and Y and feature all pigment inks. Pigment inks have excellent highlighter and smear resistant prints that business users demands. Page yields are 2500 for the black and 1600 per colour. Which puts it in line with other recent printer releases from other manufacturers.
OEM High Volume Inkjet Printers going after the top end of town
It seems business inkjet printers are certainly hotting up, with the main selling point a much lower costs per page than colour laser printers at similar pricing point.
New Epson Printer and Cartridges in Korea and Japan
Epson has released a wide range of new printers in Korea/Japan. The new cartridge models are T1801-T1804 and T1811-T18114. The new printer models are XP30,XP102,XP202,XP205,XP302,XP402 and XP405 printers.
It's a possibility that these new models will make it our way in the future.
Brother Reset Procedure
Thank you to one of our esteemed customers who provided the following information to us. Unfortunately we can't tell you his name. It's a bit like that toothbrush adverisement where they wouldn't show us his face. Maybe he's the stig of the cartridge remanufacturing game. He does drive a red car it's no ferrari but one thing is for sure the fuel economy would be better! But all jokes aside he certainly knows his stuff!

For those remanufacturing the HP61 and HP61XL colour cartridges it's important to note that there is two variations. The difference between these is the position of the magenta and yellow foams have been switched. Therefore you need to identify the magenta and yellow foams before starting the remanufacturing process.

About the setup cartridges that ship with the printer.
Information on expiry dates of HP inkjet cartridges and if overrides are available
On the underside of each cartridge there is an expiry date. In the past this did not lock the cartridge out once you reached this date. But we are encountering more and more reports of printers rejecting the cartridges that have reached this date.
HP has released a new cartridge design for the Hp Officejet 6700. The cartridge models are HP932 Black and HP932 cyan, magenta and yellow and come in two yields standard and XL. The cartridges are individual tanks but are a different design to the HP940 and HP564 type designs. The four inks cartridges contain pigment based inks and we are investigating what is the correct Sensient ink, the filling method and information on the chip.

Technical Bulletin 4th April 2012
All weirdness put to one side I think what is really needed is a database of troublesome firmware updates in Aus/NZ/Pacific Islands. This would need to be updated frequently by everybody. Maybe such a database already exists and I'm the only one still trying to decipher Nostradamus!
